EHS to Feature a New Exhibit! |

The Equinunk Historical Society is well on its way to completing the very first exhibit in the spacious upstairs exhibit room in its new building.
The theme for this year’s series of summer programs is "Historic Pastimes” and we would very much like to involve you, our members and friends.
We could use a few old instruments from the era of the Brass Bands; if not originals used in the Equinunk Band, then something of the same vintage would suffice. The instruments may be loaned or donated. The Society is seeking some artifacts relating to the years when baseball teams were popular, such as an original ball or bat to go along with ours, or written material about the teams. Photos of popular recreational events would be welcome as well. In addition, we would like to acquire for the summer (or have donated) an old square dancing dress or skirt and blouse
Just call 570-224-6722 or 570-224-4466 for information or to become involved.
Thanks, and remember we open on Memorial Day weekend, so we need these things on or before May 15th. |

Get Ready for the 2013 Car Show! |

Planning for the Historical Society’s 14th Annual Car Show is well underway. The Car Show Committee has several meetings under their belts and can’t wait for June 22nd. Arrangements for tents have been solidified and they are on reserve. We are also changing layout of tents to create more space on field and make it more convenient for handicap parking. This will be an improvement from last year. There are still details and assignments to work out, as always, but the committee is determined and confident that this will be the best show yet. So make plans to attend. As they used to say in the 50’s, be there or be square.
We would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support: Cox's Lookout General Store; Dirlam Brothers Lumber Company, Inc., Honesdale; The Equinunk Emporium; Tom Galloway Body Shop, Equinunk; Gilson Automotive, Honesdale; LaBar Computer Services, Waymart; Menotti Tire, Honesdale; Schwabs Engine Machine Shop, Honesdale; Town & Country Energy Corp., Equinunk; Wally Young Carpentry & General Contracting, Equinunk; Wayne County Ready Mix Concrete Company, Inc., Honesdale
Please consider making a donation to ensure the success of this year's Car Show - Your help counts! |

Bob Wood took a few minutes from his duties at the Joel Hill Sawmill to talk about his appreciation for the individuals who help at the mill. The crew has already met two or more times to continue work on the new visitors’ deck and to ready the mill for its first guests, a group of teachers from area schools. Area schools formerly arranged student visits to the sawmill. These visits were curtailed for budgetary and safety concerns after 9/11. Bob hopes that the classroom visits will be reinstated in the future. Some of the students became unofficial docents, explaining the workings of the old mill to their classmates, an educational and enjoyable experience all around.
Newest members of the crew, Blair Kobelin and Greg Quaglio, who Bob referred to as the “dynamic duo”, are extremely capable and work really well together. Aside from their time at the mill, Blair and Greg have put in hours of work in the upper room at the Calder House annex, the museum’s newest exhibit space. They constructed several large reusable panels on which the exhibits will be mounted, and built custom storage shelves under the stairs. They also refurbished an antique door and remounted it - it’s now the door to the inside stairwell. Carol says it looks wonderful!
This may be old news to many, but Blair and Harold Butler skillfully worked together to build our Calder Cafe kitchen, designing the counters and mounting the cabinetry. To all who put their best efforts forward to improve our facility and make it a warm and welcoming space, heartfelt thanks. |

The Passing of Friends and Family |

In the last few months, a number of our long-time friends and family have passed away. They include Connie Resti, Verne Houghtaling, Elsie Branning Watson, and Joseph Thoma.
Connie Resti
We say good-bye to our dear friend, Connie (Constance) Resti who died on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Waymart Woodlands Manor. An Equinunk resident since 1976, Connie’s was a familiar face in town, walking from her home to church, the Post Office, the general store, and to the Equinunk Historical Society. She was always busy and unfailingly cheerful. She was often found volunteering at the Calder Shop in our museum and at the United Methodist Church. Connie embodied the welcoming feeling of this small community. Friendly to all, whether you were an old friend, a new one, or just passing through, she was dearly loved and will be missed by all.

Verne Houghtaling
Verne Houghtaling, brother-in-law of the EHS staunch supporter, Barbara Houghtaling, passed away on April 9, 2013. A US Army Veteran of World War II, Verne received a stirring military salute at his burial in the Pine Mill Cemetery. Barbara’s husband Ivan, Verne's brother, is buried nearby. The Houghtaling family raised eight children in a modest house on Pine Mill Road. Verne and his wife resided in Callicoon, where he was a longtime employee of the State of New York.

Elsie Watson and Joseph Thoma
We recently heard about the passing of Elsie Branning Watson on January 11, 2013, and Joseph Thoma on March 18, 2013. Elsie was the last surviving member of the Emmett and Nellie Swendsen Branning family. Her favorite saying was "Family First," but she would still do anything to help anybody.
Joseph’s family owned a store locally. The Thoma family was well-known to residents of this area, and some individuals were members of the greater EHS family.

Plays were once held on the stage in the Equinunk Methodist Church! Bob Wood displayed flyers and pictures from these productions at a recent EHS Board of Directors meeting. The collection was mounted and framed beautifully, according to viewers. The plays were entitled “Old Fashion Mother” presented in May, 1922, “Path Across the Hill”, May, 1928, and “Confusion”, a three-act play advertised by the National Protective Legion Program, (possibly from 1900.) Some flyers included advertising for local businesses. They must have been greatly entertaining for a populace just emerging from winter hibernation in northeastern Pennsylvania. |
